Changes in Driver's Licences

P Endorsement:

  • The requirement to sit a Course to gain the P Endorsement has been removed.
  • The requirement to sit a Full Licence Test in NZ within the last 5 years has been removed.

General Licence changes:

Car Licences:

  • Time Limits - Any new or renewed learner or restricted car (or motorcycle) licence will be issued for 5 years. If you have not yet progressed to the next stage by the time of expiry you will need to sit and pass a theory test to renew your licence for another 5 years (from 1 December 2014, see http://www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/photo/driver-licence-changes.html#time-limits .)
  • The Class 1 (car) Restricted Licence test has been changed from the previous 30 minute test to a 60 minute test, including 45 minutes of drive time and 15 minutes of pre-start checks and debreifing following the test. This new test assesses the higher skill levels expected of today's more experienced licence applicants and it is recommended an applicant have 120 hours supervised driving in order to prepare for the test (see http://nzta.govt.nz/licence/photo/new-tests.html.)
  • The Class 1 (car) Full Licence test has been changed from the previous 60 minute test to a 30 minute test, including 20 minutes of drive time and 10 minutes of pre-start checks and debriefing following the test. This new test, while shorter, is not easier than the test it has replaced. Applicants are expected to be of an excellent standard to pass the test (see http://nzta.govt.nz/licence/photo/new-tests.html .)
  • Weight Limits - You are now able to drive a rigid vehicle up to 6,000kgs on a Class 1 (car) Full Licence. Learner and Restricted Licence holders are able to drive up to 4,500kgs (within the conditions of the licence.) All vehicles over 3,500kgs are required to have a certificate of loading. Please see http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/11/driver-licence-classes.html for more information.

Truck Licences:

Other Licences:

  • The "old" Bus Licence has been replaced by either the Class 2 Licence or the Class 4 Licence (for coaches over 18 tonne GVM) and the Passenger 'P' Licence Endorsement (large.)
  • The "old" Taxi Licence has been replaced by the Class 1 (car) Full Licence and the Passenger 'P' Licence Endorsement (small.) This licence is also required for shuttles, limos, private hire vehicles, and 'dial-a-driver' services.
  • The Passenger 'P' Endorsement is the same for both 'small' and 'large' and when applying for both at the same time you are able to select both and pay only the larger of the fees. Please see our 'P' Passenger tab for more information.
